After 19 years and 521 home runs one of the most consistent guys in the game is done.  The Frank “Big Hurt” Thomas will surely be missed.  Even the day he retired, he still looked like he always had.  A bare head and a big old smile.  It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 20 years, it seems like yesterday when he came up and hit for 0.330 with seven homers and 31 RBIs in September 1990.

He has had himself a Hall of Fame career.  With a career average of 0.301 and an average of 36 homers a season, the 41 year old slugger was one of the most feared hitters in the game for 13 seasons from 1990 – 2003.  He won back to back MVP awards in 1993 and 1994.  Overall he has had 9 top 10 MVP finishes, four Silver Slugger awards, and five All Star selections.  In reality he should have retired in 2007, but he felt like he had something in the tank.  2008  was a year, most Frank Thomas fans would like to forget as he moved from the Blue Jays back to the A’s amid controversy that he was unhappy with his playing time. It was far and away his worst season as a pro.

For years in the early 1990’s Frank’s cards were among the hottest in the hobby.  His 1990 Leaf card always seemed to fetch the highest dollar.  As the years went on his cards decreased in value, although his autograph values increased.  Currently most of his certified autographed cards run in the $100 range.  The one pictured below recently sold for $96 on eBay.  His rookie cards (like the one above) can be had for $1 – $3 depending on the release and of course there is the NNO version of the 1990 card which sells for between $500 – $800 if you can even find one.

Here is the contest – Name the team Frank Thomas was playing against on the front of that 1990 Topps card?

Matt, I believe you are correct. I am trying to find a picture of their uniforms circa 1988. I know the color scheme is right though.
