As many of you know Pedro was selected 2nd overall in the 2008 MLB draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was considered one of the best players in the country behind only Buster Posey. I was surprised that the Pirates would go for him since he was obviously going for a big contract and rightfully so. Unfortunately knowing the Pirates, you know at some point he will be trade bait. If only they can get some pitching.
Pedro has been quite busy this season, not only did he have himself an incredible first season but he also played for team USA in September. Last season he split time between Lynchburg (high A) and Altoona (AA) and put up nearly identical numbers for both teams and combined for 0.288/27/95. He also put up some nice numbers for team USA late last year.
As far as this season goes, he should immediately start out in AAA Indianapolis, where it will just be a matter of time before he is called up mid May or early June. The Pirates need so much help offensively it’s difficult for me to see him in the minors for too long. After watching him play in several games last season, I would say that he is MLB ready right now. There is a chance that if he has a great Spring Training, he could break camp with the Pirates.
As far as his autograph goes, it is very expensive on eBay. Like most prospects taken in the first round, his cards were gobbled up early and often. Right now his autograph is running between $22 – $28 on the Bay. A little high for my taste but if he takes off this season, those prices might seem like a bargain. I like the photo I chose for his card because it’s a very personal picture and I just think the card flows well. Originally I was going to use a yellow back, but I just didn’t like how it came out. If you want a copy of this card just let me know and we can trade something.
