I was going over the news looking for a story to write about and came across the Matt Cain contract extention.  A total six years for 127 million dollars.  So how does Tim Lincecum feel about his two years for 40.5 million dollars contract?  He is probably not happy right no, nor should he be.  Actually any 0.500 pitcher in the bigs should be pissed at the contract Cain got.

In no way shape or form should Cain have gotten that kind of money.  Did the Giants not learn anything from the Barry Zito deal?  There are maybe five pitchers in baseball that can command $20 million a year for more than say three years tops.  I can’t deny that Matt Cain is a good pitcher. A very good pitcher, but man did the Giants overpay for him.

I think that the Giants took care of the wrong pitcher, Lincecum needs to be taken care of and you know he’s going to remember this come the end of next season.  If Cain is a $20 million a year guy then Lincecum is a $30 million guy.  He is going to make them pay out the nose and he should.  When Cain brings home two Cy Young awards and over 180 strikeouts, that’s when he earns the $20 million moniker.

On the positive side, Cain is much better than his record indicates.  He is a career 69-73 pitcher, but in the past three years he has had an average of ERA of 3.02, a WHIP of 1.13 and 174 strikeouts a season.  That is a solid stat line and he is a young guy (26 years old), but I just don’t think he is worth the money.  As far as eBay is concerned the collectors aren’t paying top dollar for Cain autographs yet.  His can be had for between $12-$25, and the collectors know he’s not a top dollar pitcher.  If he was his cards would have been worth at least 3 times that amount.

Seeing contracts like these makes me wonder if Mauer got the right deal.

Terrible deal…….Votto’s deal wasn’t good either. When I think of Cain and Votto, I don’t think of the word ‘superstar’, and that’s what you need to be if you’re going to make over 20million per season.

I would love to hear from an insider scout or numbers analyst as to what Cain’s value really is in regards to the elite pitchers, even H2H with Lincecum. I’ve had Cain on my fantasy rosters and other than the W/L numbers, his numbers are right there with the upper echelon. I am not sure if he is a warranted $20M a year pitcher, but his numbers past eyetests are good. I would just love to see some in depth analysis before I follow agreement that he was overpaid.
I don’t think Barry Zito more so I think Cliff Lee when it comes to Matt Cain.

Cain is 1-0 on the season, with a 1.87 era. He’s only given up 4 hits in his last 2 gamester (both of which he pitched through the 9th) and put up 18 scoreless innings. He was one hit away from a perfect game against the Pirates and he out pitched Cliff Lee this week. The guy also had a 0.00 era through the 2010 playoffs, throwing against the bats of the Braves, Phillies, and Rangers. Do your homework. Cain is the true ace of the Giant staff and probably the most underrated pitcher in baseball.
