You have to love the Mets way of doing business.  They love to give out really bad contracts.  Now this is not even close to the Cain contract but it’s ridiculous.  The Mets need pitching, it’s not a secret that there rotation was terrible.  So instead of going out and getting some serviceable starters, they reward one of their worst rotation guys in Jon Niese.

The money per year he got wasn’t out of the question at all, it’s the fact that he got 5 years.  Let’s look at his body of work. In the past two seasons, his only two full seasons, he has been 20-21 with and ERA of 4.30 and a WHIP of 1.438 with 286 strikeouts in 331 innings.  He is only 23 this year but still, you know what you are going to get from him and I don’t think he was worth signing for 5 years.  No way does he stay in a Mets uniform for that long.

I’m a Yankees fan so in reality I could care less about this deal, but seriously how does this deal make sense.  In fact, I love when the Mets make terrible deals.  Even on eBay he is not a big name although his autograph was worth more than I thought they would be worth.  They run for between $6-$12.  At that price I say sell.  I just don’t see his long term value being there.  I guess we will find out at the end of this year if he is getting any better.

I expected such a response out of a yankee fan like yourself. Niese is still a young player, having his season cut short two years ago with a leg injury. He is ONLY 23, its not like hes in the prime of his career with those numbers and got that contract.
